PGT Window Replacement: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

If you have a PGT window with a failed part, we stock and install replacement components matched to your specific model, with installed pricing in Los Angeles typically running $180 to $420 per window for glass, sash, or hardware replacement. We carry the common PGT parts on our trucks, so most jobs finish in one visit. Most owners discover a problem the same way: a window that suddenly won’t lock, a sash that drops when you raise it, or glass that fogs between the panes where it never used to.

PGT builds impact-rated windows that hold up remarkably well in Southern California, but the coastal sun and inland heat take a toll on seals, springs, and nylon guides over time. The good news is that a failing component rarely means you need a whole new window. Replacing the part, when it’s matched correctly to your PGT series, restores the window to factory performance for a fraction of full replacement cost.

Which PGT Models This Applies To

PGT’s residential lineup in Los Angeles spans several series, and parts are not interchangeable across all of them. The most common models we service are the WinGuard, SpectraGuard, and ClassicVue series, along with the older PGT 500 and 700 lines still found in homes built in the 1990s and early 2000s. A balance shoe from a WinGuard single-hung will not fit a ClassicVue vinyl frame, even if both sashes measure the same width. That’s the compatibility gotcha that trips up DIY orders.

To identify what you have, look for the etched logo in the corner of the glass or a white sticker on the frame edge that lists the series and date code. If the sticker is gone, we can identify the model from the frame profile and hardware style. When it comes to parts, we recommend OEM PGT components for anything structural: glass, sashes, and frames. For wear items like nylon guides and weatherstripping, quality aftermarket equivalents work well and cost 20% to 30% less. We’ll tell you which is which before you spend a dollar.

Hale Windows & Doors is an independent service provider and not affiliated with PGT. We work with their products because we’ve found them to be among the most repairable impact windows on the market.

Signs Your PGT Window Replacement Is Failing

  • Sash drops when you raise it. The balance system inside the frame has failed. PGT uses coil balances or block-and-tackle balancers depending on the series, and both wear out in 10 to 15 years of daily use.
  • Window won’t lock or the lock doesn’t engage cleanly. The keeper (the metal piece on the frame the lock latches into) has fallen out of alignment, usually because the sash has settled slightly. It’s a simple fix, but forcing it wears the lock mechanism down.
  • Fog or condensation between the glass panes. The insulated glass unit’s seal has broken. In Los Angeles, the heat cycling between hot days and cool coastal nights accelerates seal failure, especially on south-facing elevations.
  • Water staining or soft drywall under the window. The glazing bead or seal between the frame and the rough opening has failed. Rain in Los Angeles is infrequent but intense when it arrives, and a small leak goes unnoticed for months.
  • You can feel air moving around the closed sash. The weatherstripping has compressed and lost its rebound. PGT’s original weatherstripping is dense EPDM, but it breaks down after years of UV exposure.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here is the range we quote in Los Angeles, parts and labor included:

Modern front door replacement on a contemporary home with large glass windows. nationwide
  • Balance replacement (single sash): $180 to $260
  • Lock and keeper replacement: $140 to $210
  • Weatherstripping replacement (full perimeter): $120 to $190
  • Insulated glass unit replacement: $280 to $420
  • Full sash replacement: $320 to $480
  • Full window replacement (impact-rated PGT): $900 to $1,600

What moves the price: the PGT series you have, whether the glass is impact-rated or standard, the window’s size, and accessibility (second-story work costs more than ground floor). You get a written line-item price before we start. The price on the sheet is the price on the invoice. Every repair carries a written guarantee, and if it fails, the second visit is free. That’s backing what we do, not asking you to trust what we say.

DIY or Call Us?

There are things worth checking yourself. Confirm the window is fully closed and not obstructed by debris before deciding the lock is broken. That eliminates about a third of service calls. You can also remove the sash on most double-hung PGT models by tilting it inward and lifting, then visually inspecting the balance shoe. But swapping a balance, reseating a coil spring, or replacing an insulated glass unit is not a casual weekend project. Coil balances are under constant tension. A slipped tool on a WinGuard balance can snap metal across the room. On impact glass, which is heavy, a DIY glass swap that drops the sash can crack the frame permanently.
