Window Repair Stopped Working

If your window stopped latching, stopped opening, or a repair you had done recently isn’t holding, you’re almost certainly looking at a worn hardware component, a failed seal, or a sash that has shifted in its frame. In most cases, a trained technician can diagnose the exact cause on the first visit and fix it the same day.

Call (252) 675-6980

Windows are mechanical things. Balances wear out. Hardware corrodes. Caulk and glazing compound dry and crack. And if a prior repair used the wrong part or wasn’t seated correctly, it will fail again – sometimes within weeks. The good news is that the failure usually points directly at a single component, and once you know which one, the fix is straightforward. What you see and hear when you try to operate the window tells the story before anyone touches a tool.

Why It Happens

1. A Balance or Tilt-Latch Has Given Out

Window balances – the spring-loaded or block-and-tackle mechanisms that counterweight a sash so you can raise it with one finger – are the most common failure point in double-hung and single-hung windows. When one breaks, the sash drops the moment you let go, or it won’t stay up at all. If your window falls on its own or suddenly feels much heavier than it used to, a balance is almost certainly the reason. You may also hear a loud snap or a scraping sound when it goes.

2. A Sash or Frame Has Shifted Out of Square

Houses settle. Seasonal humidity swells and shrinks wood frames. Over time, the opening the window sits in can rack slightly out of square, and even a small shift – a fraction of an inch at a corner – is enough to make a sash bind, stick, or refuse to lock. The tell is a lock or latch that used to line up cleanly and now doesn’t quite catch, or a window that drags on one side but not the other. This is especially common in older construction and in climates with pronounced wet-dry seasonal cycles.

3. Hardware Has Corroded or Failed

Locks, handles, casement operators, and tilt latches are metal parts in a humid environment. Eventually they corrode, strip, or simply wear through their mechanical tolerance. A lock that turns but doesn’t engage, a crank handle that spins without moving the sash, or a latch that wiggles loosely in its housing – all of these point to failed hardware rather than a frame or glass problem. This is also what you get when the wrong-gauge or wrong-series replacement part was used in a prior repair.

4. A Prior Repair Didn’t Hold

A repair can fail because the wrong part was used, because a seal wasn’t cleaned before it was applied, or because a screw was driven into compromised material that couldn’t hold it. If the window worked for a few weeks and then failed again in the same spot, look closely at the repair area: lifted caulk, a screw that turns without biting, or a seal line that has separated are all signs the original fix didn’t take. Under Hale’s written guarantee, if a repair fails, a second visit is free – no argument required.

What to Do Right Now

  • Stop forcing it. If the sash is binding or the hardware isn’t engaging cleanly, forcing it can crack the glass, strip the hardware further, or damage the frame. Set it to whatever position it rests in comfortably and leave it there.
  • Photograph the failure point. Use your phone to take two or three clear photos – one of the full window, one close-up of the latch, hardware, or spot where it fails. This gives the technician a head start and helps you describe the problem clearly when you call.
  • Check whether the window will close and lock securely. Security is the immediate concern. If it won’t lock, prop it shut from inside if possible and call sooner rather than later.
  • Note whether the problem is new or recurring. If you’ve had this window repaired before and it’s failed again in the same place, tell the technician. That history matters for diagnosing root cause.
  • Do not attempt to adjust or replace the spring balance yourself. Window balances are under real mechanical tension – enough to cause a serious hand or eye injury if released incorrectly. Diagnosing what’s wrong is fine; taking the balance out is a job for someone with the right tools and training.

How We Fix It

When your local Hale Windows & Doors technician arrives, the first thing they do is operate the window the way you would – raise it, lower it, lock it, unlock it – so they can feel exactly where it fails. From there, they’ll inspect the balance, hardware, sash alignment, and frame squareness in sequence. Most diagnoses take less than fifteen minutes.

Once the cause is confirmed, you get a written price before anything is touched. That’s how every Hale job works – the number is in your hands first, and it doesn’t change after the fact.

For most single-component failures – a balance, a lock set, a casement operator – the repair is done in one visit. For sash or frame alignment issues, the technician may need to adjust the frame stops, re-square the sash, or, if the frame itself has deteriorated beyond adjustment, recommend a window replacement through Hale’s full service line. Either way, every repair includes a written guarantee, and if it fails, the return visit is free.

This falls under Hale’s Window Repair service. If the frame or glass damage is extensive enough that repair doesn’t make sense, Window Replacement is the next step – and the same technician can walk you through both options.
